Rocky is a 2 yr old black and tan boy. He is 14lbs, and very long. He was surrendered to Toronto Animal Control because of family allergies and Toronto Animal Control gave him to us. He is neutered, up-to-date on shots and even had a manicure. He is your usual 2 yr old boy, lots of energy, but basically a calm little guy. He lacks manners but we are working on that. He is mostly house broken and we are working on that too. He is a sweet sweet boy, who loves to snuggle and play with his toys. He gets along with all my dogs and even my cats. He had some separation anxiety, but as his self confidence builds this issue is corrected. With some work on his manners he will be a wonderful addition to any family.

Shanie Print E-mail
Available Dogs

We were told that Shanie's last owner threatened to shoot him because he wasn't housetrained. Shanie is a wonderful, loving pup.  He is responding quite well to training and is showing lots of intelligence in his learning.  He knows what it means to go outside and once hes out in the backyard he understands when I say go pee, and when he does pee he gets tons of rubs and praises.  He walks well on a leash and loves his daily walks.

Shanie is understandably shy when first meeting people but he warms up really, really fast and is so loving.  He loves his good food and treats and already knows sit and down commands which of course get a 'good boy' treat afterward.  His coat is gorgeous and shiny and he looks very handsome.  I gave him a bath yesterday and he was very good and patient.

Shanie is small, weighs only about 7 lbs but he is tall so stairs and jumping are not a problem for him whatsoever.  He is mixed with either Chihaahaa or MinPin, but whatever his mix, hes a cutie.

He loves, loves, loves to play with all the toys and runs around with our dog all day!  Then they snuggle up like old pals and snooze.  Shanie needs to go to a house with another dog, it seems he really enjoys the security of another dog, and of course the romping around.

Doogle Print E-mail
Happy Tails

  ADOPTED

Doogle is he is a very stereotypical 7 month old puppy he loves to play and then crashes for a while.  He would do well with another dog who wants to play all the time, and who can keep him company when nobody's home.
He is not aggressive at all. He doesn't bite with any force when playing, takes treats gently, can be pet when eating, is docile when hurt/in pain.
He's easy to train- has learned sit and stay and is working very hard on come.  He's also working a lot on house training... he's having a very difficult time, so patience and persistence is needed.
Overall Doogle is a very easy going boy.  He likes to be warm and sleep snuggled in your lap; play fetch and tug; go for walks.

Bella and Chloe
These two sweethearts were rescued from a backyard breeder. They love each other very much, and are a package deal. Bella is a 14-pound, black smooth mini, and is about 10 years old – but acts much younger. She likes to lead, and Chloe likes to follow. Chloe is a red smooth mini, and is about 4 or 5 years old, and 10 pounds (we’re trying to fatten her up a bit). They spend their days cuddling together in a knot, or looking for patches of sun to lie in.

Bella loves tummy rubs and chasing squirrels, and Chloe loves to do whatever Bella is doing. They both love to give kisses at night before bed. Neither is currently house-trained, but both are doing really well learning the rules with their foster parents, and will need a strong hand to continue this work. They are content to snuggle in their crate when their foster parents go out. Both have lost some of their fur due to over breeding and stress, so will need some extra help to grow a shiny coat.

They are great on their walks, and are mostly good with the dogs they meet in the park - they could go to a home with (an)other dog(s). They are fantastic with kids and haven't shown any signs of aggression. However, they should go to a cat-free home.

Milo

ADOPTED!!!

Hi, I am Milo, which is pronounced Meeloh for some reason, but hey, we all have our uniqueness!  I'm 12 years old, but around here they say I act like a 7 year old.  I'm in really good condition, that's why, I work out every day with my tennis ball and I love it!  Apparently, dachshunds are not known as retrievers, but hey, it's great fun, I run, I catch the tennis ball then I bring it back to you.  If you don't pick it up right away that's okay, because I will push it with my nose so you don't forget.

I was neutered and had my teeth cleaned and I'm all ready to go.  Oh, I should mention, I like other dogs, don't mind cats at all and I love to be cuddled (as you can see).  I am housetrained, but you might have to remind me not to mark my territory.  Sorry, but some habits are hard to break after 12 years!   I am being fostered by a nice lady in North York.

If you apply to adopt and we don't have a suitable dog for your home, you are added to the waiting list once your application is approved. As dogs come in, they are matched to the approved adopters. If there are no approved adopters interested, THEN the dog goes on our site.

Please apply if you'd like to adopt a dachshund, or check back soon, we never know what tomorrow will bring.

Hope Print E-mail
Happy Tails

 ADOPTED

Hope is a 7 month old black and tan smooth girl looking for a forever home. Hope had a tough start - her mother died when giving birth and she was the only surviving puppy. She had to be tube fed until she could eat on her own. That's not all - she also had some bowel problems and needed corrective surgery before she was even 2 months old. She overcame all the odds but perhaps because she was handled so much, she can be a bit needy.

She would like a home with other dogs and will not be placed with young children. She does not understand leashes and will need continued leash training and socialization, as well as the basic obedience any dog her age needs. She is affectionate and good with everyone, but she is nervous when there are loud noises and sudden movements.

Puppies are adorable, but are a lot of work. Her ideal owners will have the time and experience to train and love this special girl.

Hope has been spayed and is up-to-date with her vaccinations. Her adoption fee is $350.

Gypsy Print E-mail
Happy Tails

ADOPTED

Gypsy is a young dachshund and shih tzu mix who looks a lot like a cream wire dachshund, but with a shorter nose and a very soft coat. She's friendly with people and she likes other dogs. She is very active and busy and would prefer a home with another dog. She is not leash trained and is learning how to use one but that training will be ongoing. She lived a sheltered life so you'll need to work on socialization so she learns to be comfortable in new situations.

She is an adorable wonderful girl and would make a great addition to almost any home.

Sara Print E-mail

ADOPTED

Through no fault of her own, Sara had to join us at the rescue. It might not have seemed like it to her, but it was her lucky day. She was loved, but she needed vet care. Her mouth was so rotten that she lost every single tooth she had - at only 6 years old. We can't imagine the pain she must have been in. Sara is an absolutely lovely girl and as soon as she was healthy, she went to a great home with someone on our waiting list. We're very happy that she's going to spend her life being spoiled.

Shamus Print E-mail
Happy Tails

ADOPTED
UPDATE: Shamus has continued to make great progress. He is nearly house trained and is crate trained. He gives kisses and loves his rubs. He's still a barker when nervous but he's improving. To keep him on the right track and to make sure he doesn't become anxious, he needs a firm but gentle owner. He is 6 months old now and is ready for his forever home.

Hi my name is Shamus.  They say I am almost 5 months old but no one cared enough to write my Birthday down.  I was born in something my foster mommy calls a Puppy Mill.  I was kept in a cage the whole time, my ears hurt because others had chewed the edges of them so much.  One day I was taken to a cleaner place and got a bed on my own called a crate by something called a human.  A lot of the dogs were sick in the mill so I had to stay another 2 weeks in a crate, but at least this one was clean all the time and I had food and water all the time.  The humans tried to touch me as often as possible but I was too scared to trust them.  My foster mommy now is so nice, she bathed me and cleaned my ears out and works every day on the edges so they are feeling much better.  I only stay in the crate at night and she says I am a big boy because I sleep so well now.  Sometimes I have to have quiet time in the crate if I get too freaked out but that's okay I nap then feel better.  I have been with her almost two weeks now and she has a nice voice and a gentle hand, I enjoy cuddling up to her on the couch and i even like it when she holds me and talks to me.  I really am trying to get this housetraining thing but I had no choice but to 'go' in my cage so i forget I am supposed to only go outside.  I do know I don't go in my bed now though, it feels much better clean and dry.  I love running around with my foster brothers and sisters, and I like these things mom calls toys.

I HAVE BEEN ADOPTED!

Oscar

Oscar is very sweet and a little fearful at first, especially when cornered, but he is not aggressive  I think he would do well in a mature home with a VERY secure fenced yard. Oscar also needs a companion, he will not go out on his own at night because he is too scared, so he needs a bathroom buddy.  His neuter surgery is all healed and he's starting to play with my dogs now. He's just a little snuggle bug, a silver dapple with 1 and 1/2 blue eyes!

Benji ADOPTED!!

I have only had him a week but he is doing very well. He is totally housebroken, uses the dog door and he is very friendly and starting to trust me, but is still very fearful of quick moves and reaching into him. He is very good with my guys and also my cats. Doesn't seem to play much or doesn't quite know how yet. He loves his walks and is good on a leash. He is quiet, and very low key. I think he too will be ready for a family who is patient with his fears. and he should have another dog in the house. He absolutely hates the crate, and will bark and bark, but loves my bed and snuggles down under the covers for the whole night.

Lucy Print E-mail
Happy Tails

ADOPTED
Lucy is an adorable small standard black and tan girl looking for a forever home. She's working on her figure and should weigh around 17 pounds when she's done. The 'standard' designation starts at 16 pounds. Minis are under 11 pounds at 1 year of age, and everything in between 12 and 15 pounds we call 'tweenies'

Lucy is very sweet and loving. She loves cuddles and attention. She's another dog that's like 'a puppy in an adult body' and is catching on to housebreaking and walking on the leash quite well. She loves other dachshunds and must be placed in a home where she will have doggy friends. If you'd consider a pair, she especially loves her 'brother' Oliver.

Well hello there! My name is Oliver. I'm a shy handsome 3 year old red tweenie boy looking for a forever home. I used to be a stud, I think I'm still quite the catch, but now I just want to share my loving by cuddling on the couch. Sometimes being a stud isn't all that you'd think it is and I've got some scars to prove it - but I'm told they just add character. I'm just now learning to live in a house and mind my manners. I've also learned about things like 'leashes' and 'collars' and how by accepting these I get to enjoy 'walks'. I'm loving it all.

We're calling Shaggy our 5 year old, 12 pound 'designer breed' dog. He's a found as a stray and we were told he was a wire dachshund mix but we'll just call him super cute, whatever he is. He's a bit shy and fearful with new people but will warm up to his new family in a day or so. He's very much a terrier and enjoys playing with his toys with you. He might have been an apartment dog because for him going outside means putting on a leash.

Cinnamon and Mocha are 18 month old sisters. Cinnamon is a standard 'red' girl, but is really a beautiful mix of colours. She has the light eyes and nose of a chocolate, a reddish/chocolate face, a blond neck, and swirls of different reds in her body. She is sweet, shy, and submissive. Mocha is a chocolate tweenie girl. She is the leader of the pair. She's also shy and sweet but as she settles, we'll probably see a bit more of a dachshund stubborn streak from her.

Sophie is a wonderful 3 year old standard dapple girl. She has retired from breeding and is now looking for a home of her own. She lived a bit of a sheltered life and needs some socialization. She is wearing a collar for the first time and learning how to walk on a leash. She's meeting more people than ever before. A lot of experiences are new for her so you need to have the patience to ensure that each one is a good one. She has never been alone and would prefer not to be an only dog. She loves attention and loves people but is shy and a bit nervous for a few minutes until she decides you're ok. She has a wonderful personality, understands housetraining, likes other dachshunds, and loves a belly rub.

He gets along with other dogs and is used to constant companionship and lots of people around. He's a 'tweenie' but is overweight and you'll need to get him on a good diet and exercise program to trim off 5-6 pounds. I hear he is gorgeous, though matted. He's going to have a day at the spa having his hair and nails done. He's neutered and vaccinated and ready to join your family.

ADOPTED

Angel is a sweet mini 11 year old black and tan dapple girl. She has always been loved and well cared for and it shows in her condition and temperament. She walks nicely, sleeps wherever you put her bed, absolutely adores children, meets strangers well, and generally gets along with all dogs and cats. She loves toys, she loves people, she loves playing, and she is housetrained. She was a bit possessive the day she arrived but once she settles she quickly gets along with everyone. There's really not much to say about the good ones, and she's a great dog.

She will do well in almost any home of dachshund-lovers. She's on prescription weight loss food right now - she has a pound or two to lose, but with a good measured diet and regular exercise, she'll be fit and trim again in no time.

Kramer (on the left) is a 12 year old true standard smooth red boy. He has been a loved one-owner dog all his life and has grown up with kids. He's a bit confused about this change, but dogs are great at adapting. He'd be an excellent companion in any home.

Kramer gets along with all the other dogs in his foster home and is a polite and lovely gentleman. He just had his teeth cleaned and he's ready to give you loving kisses if you'll just give him a home where he can enjoy his retirement.

 ADOPTION PENDING

Jackson is the new kid and will spend some time in foster care as we learn more about him and vet him neutered and ready for adoption. He loves other dachshunds and loves to cuddle but gets a bit too attached to his owner. As he becomes more secure (he just lost his home and spent some miserable time in a shelter) we'll work on his confidence and get him more socialized and less clingy. He can be feisty and needs a home with other dogs, but no kids.

More to come on Jackson.

Toto Print E-mail
Happy Tails

 ADOPTED

Toto was found abandoned in a park in Montreal. He is a sprightly 2 year old mini (around 11 lbs) black and tan boy who loves to play with other dogs, cuddle on the couch or generally check into whatever you are doing. He learns quickly and after three days had the routines down pat. He's crate trained, about 99% housebroken, loves people and other dogs.  He was afraid of a cat he stayed with and has not been evaluated with children.

Toto is adorable, skinny with a wasp waist in spite of all the food we give him. He's very active, loves car rides and walks. His one minor physical flaw is that he doesn't have any toes on his left hind paw, but this doesn't seem to bother him in the least.

Paris Print E-mail
Happy Tails

 Adopted!

Paris is a 7 year old mini dappled piebald girl. This picture doesn't do her justice - she is very cute. Of the three dogs we rescued from a life of breeding, Paris is the most outgoing. She might have been a loved pet in the house before she started breeding. She loves attention and is very sweet.

Paris is learning about walks and leashes and all the good things that come with being a member of the family. Paris is good with everyone.

Paris is currently in heat and is not available for adoption until after we can spay her in 6 weeks or so.

Nikki Print E-mail
Happy Tails

Adopted!

Nikki is a 4 year old tweenie piebald girl who has spent her life breeding. She is one of three dogs that we rescued together. She is the most afraid of the three. She is very curious about everything and pays attention to other dogs so she can follow their lead. She likes to be petted, but is nervous about hands reaching for her. We're confident that in a couple of weeks she'll be a very different dog. She has never lived in a house but is learning quickly.

Nikki gets along with everyone but would do best without young children because their fast movements would scare her. She has never been alone and would do best with another dog in the house.

Nikki will be available later this month after she is spayed.

Tommy Print E-mail
Happy Tails

 ADOPTED

Tommy is a 3 year old piebald boy who was used for breeding. He wasn't even given a name. He is shy but very happy in your lap accepting your love. As he learns more about all the good things about being a loved family member, he'll be a cuddly dog. He's quickly learning all the good stuff - housetraining, walking on a leash, and how to be a dog.

He is a stunning tweenie boy. He's in good shape and has no problem climbing everything in your house. He is good with everyone, but because he is skittish should not be with young children. The quick movements will scare him and he'll try to hide.

He has never been alone and would do best with another dog who will help him learn the rules of your house. He'd love it if you adopted one of his old girlfriends, Paris or Nikki!

Tommy will be available after he is neutered later this month.

 ADOPTED

Doris is a 4 year old red smooth 12 pound girl. She's full of energy and loves attention. She likes to play with other dogs, but is a dominant girl and needs to be the queen. She's very much a typical dachshund and is smart and stubborn. She has a big personality in a small body and she'll make you laugh with her bravado.

She looks sad in this picture, but this was taken in doggie jail. She was an unclaimed stray and did her time at an animal control facility. She's a very happy dog in her foster home.

Oscar Print E-mail
Happy Tails

 ADOPTED

Oscar is not with CDR. His owners are looking for a great home for him. He is in Ottawa.

OSCAR  is a 4 year old male neutered dachshund. He has an  incredibly sweet personality and is very affectionate.  Unfortunately he was abused when he was a puppy and as a result he is very scared of people he doesn’t know, especially men.  Oscar will be happiest in a quiet home, maybe with a retired couple who are home all day and who can give him the love and assurance that he so desperately craves.  He is very good with other dogs and cats and plays well with both!  He is  99% housetrained but if it is really cold outside he does prefer the carpet in the basement to going  outside if he can get away with it!

Oscar is a lovely little dog and he deserves to be happy.  It important to us that we find him the right home with people who are calm, quiet and gentle.  He does not have an aggressive bone in his body and we are sure that there must be a couple out there somewhere who could offer him an ideal home.

Use our application form to apply to adopt Oscar. Homes will be screened by us and approved adopters passed to the owner.

Wrigley Print E-mail

 I'm getting another chance!

Awww, how cute! Wrigley is a neutered 1 year old 12 pound Dachshund/Jack Russel mix. He is NOT with CDR, but his owner is looking for a great home for him. He is in Guelph, Ontario.

Wrigley is a very smart boy. He can sit, shake, lie down and catch. He loves toys and loves a challenge. His new owners must be dog experienced and able to work with him.

Being a mix of two smart and stubborn breeds, one very energetic, he needs a home that understands his temperament and loves him for it. He can get growly when overwhelmed by too many people and he can be dominant. He'd benefit from advanced training classes (like tricks) that will challenge and socialize him, and activities that keep him busy and reinforce that you're the boss.

Because he needs work learning to meet people, he is not suitable for apartments or condos or for families with young children. He should be in a home with few visitors and a large fenced yard. He can be aggressive and his new owners should be prepared to work with a behaviorist and vet to help him with his issues. 90% of the time he is great, however, the other 10% can't be ignored.

Dusty is a five year old long haired former showdog whose owner/breeder died.  He is a beautiful mini/tweenie about 12 lbs. who is affectionate once he knows you, is used to being handled and does not snap at strangers.  However, he does take a while to warm up to people, so don't expect him to jump into your arms right away. Also, he doesn't play with my dogs, much as Henry has tried to get him interested. The closest he comes is running around the garden beside Henry, and occasionally jumping over him. :)

For a dachshund, he's very quiet. He's crate trained and likes to go into his crate during the day when things get too hectic.  I don't know how he'd be with cats, but older children should be fine with him.  Alas he is not quite house trained, but close. He does mark his territory, perhaps not realizing he's been neutered.  Dusty is a charming dog, and will reward patience.

 ADOPTION PENDING

Paddy is a young adult black and tan boy with lots of energy. He's always looking for fun. He was given up because he was marking - but he was not neutered. We're taking care of that and are working on his manners. Paddy has a heart murmur that you'll need to keep an eye on, but many dogs live a full life with a murmur.

He'd love another dog to play with but will be happy if you give him plenty of attention and exercise.

Happy Tails

ADOPTION PENDING!!!

Hoolie (short for Hooligan) is an adorable young black and tan standard boy. We think he is around 14-18 months but he still acts very much like a puppy. Life is all about playing and loving you.

It's amazing that he is this way because someone has abused this pup. He was found emaciated, with a broken tail, and he has a scar that goes all the way around his muzzle, like it was held closed with an elastic band. Part of his tail has been amputated and the scar on his face might fade as it heals, but he needs your help to fix some emotional damage.

ADOPTION PENDING

Minnie is a 16 month-old smooth tan girl. She is really affectionate and loves to play tug of war and cuddle. She also loves to lick mouths and noses, so shy adopters need not apply! She loves meeting and playing with new dogs, but does not like cats. She is very agile and exuberant, so no toddlers either.

Fran&Mort

FRANNIE IS ADOPTED, MORTIMER HAS APPLICANTS

Mortimer is a black and tan mini dachshund (the one on the right) who is looking for a new home. Mortimer is good with cats and is alright with children so long as they aren't making loud noises, as this frightens him. He has snapped in the past when he is afraid or startled suddenly. Mortimer suffers from separation anxiety, although with another dog around to keep him company he does get better. Mortimer is very bright and learns quickly.

Please note Mortimer will be placed in an adult only home.

Roma Print E-mail

Roma

ADOPTION PENDING!!!

Roma has come to us from the Ottawa Humane Society, he is a standard dachshund and very handsome! He was surrendered by a family because he needs a firm hand and experienced dachshund owner. He is getting along beautifully with other dogs in the foster home and is doing well with the foster mom who knows her stuff! Roma needs to be in an environment that understands he can become dominant and the new owners will have to work with him on that. Basically, he has been spoiled rotten and it shows!

Max Print E-mail
Happy Tails

Max is a young red dapple male dachshund who is in need of a good home with the opportunity to play. He is very friendly, loves to play with other dogs and is full of energy. Max has a minor medical condition that requires him to take enzymes to help him digest his food, but other than that he is very healthy. Max would not be a good dog for apartments as he barks at anyone near the door. Max is not good around children, they make him very nervous.

Maddie Print E-mail

ADOPTED!!!

Madison is an adorable 13 year old red girl. She asks for very little - just food and love and she's the happiest girl going. She likes her own little bed most of the time but does love to cuddle with you when you are sitting of the sofa.  She's really no trouble and just wants a home. She's funny, affectionate, outgoing, and a pleasure to have around.

ADOPTION PENDING!

I'M REALLY POPULAR. I'VE GOT LOTS OF APPLICATIONS TO ADOPT ME NOW. PLEASE TRY TO ADOPT ONE OF MY OTHER FRIENDS WITH CDR.

Edwin is a 5 year old mini boy. He is house trained and crate trained. He was surrendered because he is a dominant boy, but we've noticed that he is really just being a dachshund. He might be a little protective of his food and chewies but we haven't seen this in foster care. He gets along with other dachshunds and is a happy guy.

 ADOPTION PENDING

Picture available on request

Rocky is a red smooth mini 2 year old boy. He weighs around 8 lbs. When he arrived in rescue he was too scared to even eat when his foster dad was in the room, but since then he has learned that humans are pretty ok and petting and all that cuddling stuff is quite nice, too. He's well on his way to becoming a 'normal' happy young dachsie. He's still a bit nervous around fast hands or strange noises, but he'll continue to improve as you expose him to new situations. He's looking for a child-free home (only because they move too quickly) with dog-experienced owners who will continue to socialize him.

Milo Print E-mail

Milo is a chocolate and tan mini boy. He is 11 but says that age is just a number and he is active and healthy. He has always been a loved companion and is house trained, crate trained, and trained to go on a mat when no one is home. He love a cuddle and would like a family that can spend time with him. He would do best in an adult home or a home with older children. He has the typical dachshund personality and will protect his owners from any perceived evils.

 ADOPTION PENDING

Oscar is an 18 month old black and tan tweenie.

I'm sweet and loving and outgoing. Very, very outgoing. I'm still here because I'm an active dominant dog and I need an experienced owner who makes sure that I'm not the boss. And I like to be the boss. I like cats and cuddles and toys and walks, and if you let me out often and feed me on a schedule, I'm house trained. I'm ok with other dachshunds as long as they are submissive. No kids, please. I need an adult home.

ADOPTION PENDING!!

Buddy is a 13 year old dachsh... wait... that's not a dachshund. Buddy snuck into the dachshund rescue with Ruby. He's a very small GSD mix, perhaps. Weighing only 35 lbs, we really have no idea what kind of dog he is but he has a GSD-like coat. We were told that Ruby was very bonded to him but she's ok without him and we think we'll have more luck placing them separately. He is very friendly and gets along with everybody, including cats.

She has already lost several pounds in foster care and is ready for her spay and adoption. She still has to lose 8 lbs to reach her goal of 30 lbs and with a prescription diet food and lots of walks, she'll be fit in no time.

Lili Print E-mail
Happy Tails

Don't wait to see the perfect dog here. Lili is going to a home on our waiting list.

Lili is a 3-6 year old mini smooth female who is one of the sweetest and most affectionate dogs we've had. She's great with other dogs and would fit into any family. She was a stray and is emaciated, intact, and has a hernia. We're fattening her up, having her spayed, and we're consulting a specialist about her hernia.

We suspect that Lili was a mill mom who was set free to be eaten by the coyotes. Because of her hernia she could no longer breed. She was found in an area where this commonly happens. It's very sad that anyone could treat dogs this way.

The Perfect Dog For My Family Print E-mail
Information

The Perfect Dog for My Family

Your perfect match may not be available today but, unfortunately, there are many homeless dogs and who knows what tomorrow will bring. We keep a waiting list of approved applicants and many dogs are placed in approved homes before they are listed on our site. Please fill out an application if you would like to adopt a dachshund or dachshund mix!

Notice though how I say ‘the perfect dog for your family’, not ‘the perfect dog’. There are no perfect dogs, just like there are no perfect people. Most, but not all, rescue dogs have an ‘issue’ that landed them in rescue.

Many are not good with kids because kids move quickly, are unpredictable, and can be scary to a small dog who is not used to them. Most need additional socialization and a refresher in house training. Some need to be convinced that they will never again be abused before they will greet you with a kiss and a wag. All dogs would benefit from training classes.

Unless otherwise noted, all dogs are fostered and will be placed in Ontario.

About the Dogs Print E-mail
Information
The dogs listed on this page are being fostered in Ontario.

If none of these dogs suit your family and you don't want to join our waiting list, don’t worry, there are other Canadian and American rescue groups that can help you find the right dog for your family. Please see our Links page for other dachshund rescues, and all-breed rescues.

All dogs are spayed or neutered and are up-to-date on vaccinations before adoption.

If you are interested in adopting, please fill out an application and ask about one of these furkids.

Fees Print E-mail
Fees

Under 1 year: $350
1 - 10 years:
$300
10 year +:
$200

Dogs that require ongoing treatment may have reduced adoption fees.

Q. You are willing to take in an unwanted adult dog - why is there an adoption fee?

A. Canadian Dachshund Rescue is a not for profit organization. All members are volunteers. Simply put, the dog that you are adopting has received veterinary attention that cost money. While some dogs cost CDR less than the adoption fee, many cost significantly more.  We work hard to fundraise for the rescue, but adoption fees are a major source of the income that allows us to keep saving dogs.

All dogs that enter CDR see a vet for a checkup and are spayed or neutered before adoption, if possible. All dogs are brought up-to-date on their vaccinations unless the vet recommends against it. If internal or external parasites are seen by the vet, the appropriate tests and treatments are provided before adoption. At the time of adoption, the adopter will be notified of any outstanding veterinary care required that we are aware of and assumes responsibility for all costs after the date of adoption. For example, if you adopt a dog that can't be vaccinated for several months after adoption because he or she is recovering from an illness, you will be responsible for those vaccinations.

In addition to the standard health care given to each dog, many often need additional medical care, including dental care, urinalysis and treatment for bladder infections, blood tests, medication, biopsies, and surgery. Canadian Dachshund Rescue has had several foster dogs that have required back surgery. At $3500-$5000 each time, that's an awful lot of bake sales.

The table below shows the average cost for basic vet care.

Cost Spay (female)
 $230
 Neuter (male)
 $130
 Vaccination (office visit) $65
 Heartworm test $30
 Heartworm medication$10/month
 Fecal $35
 Deworming $10
 Flea control $10
Total female dog $425
 Total male dog
 $325

Update - Thanks to a very kind and generous family, Mrs. Dash (aka Dachsie or Dash) was able to have surgery to remove her lame leg. She is recovering very well and has figured out how to balance without her useless limb. She hopes that now that she no longer looks like she is holding up her leg in pain, she will finally find a home.

NEW: CDR is currently only servicing Ontario

CDR does not have the membership or leadership presence to handle adoptions outside of Ontario. Over the past 7 years we have had wonderful volunteers helping in other provinces, but we found that one or two volunteers in each province is not enough to handle the workload. Over 95% of our membership and dogs in need are in the Ontario so we have reduced our focus to this region. Outside of Ontario, we continue to work with local rescues to help dachshunds in need. If you are a rescue and need to find a home for a dachshund, we can post the dog for you. If you are an owner needing to rehome your dachshund, you can contact us and we will do our best to direct you to a local rescue.

If you would like to lead and manage a dachshund rescue in your province, you can contact us for information and support.
