Rosie Update!

October 17, 2011 at 11:48 am • Posted in Foster dogs, Rosie, wiener blog2 Comments

According to the vet, Rosie’s leg is healing really well! However, if you’re anything like me – that picture still makes your tummy turn! (but you should have seen it 3 weeks ago!). The vet has suggested that we leave it unbandaged so that the air can help it scab – that is definitely easier said than done with an 8 month old puppy who is all about wrestling, playing, running and LICKING! She’s made it bleed a few times so when her bandage is off we keep her under close watch!

You can really tell how much smaller her injured leg is compared to her good legs and the vet is still concerned over how hesitant Rosie is to use her injured leg. Once her wounds heal she will need extensive therapy to gain mobility in that leg.

She is such a trooper and manages just fine with her three legs! I will try to take a video of how she gets around. She is such a happy puppy but we’re working on teaching her appropriate doggy behaviour as in biting noses, although cute, is not acceptable, not every dog on this earth was made to be your playmate and my personal favourite cell phones are meant for talking on, not chewing up! LOL She is a very confident little pup – not afraid of anything or anyone! She’s made best buddies with our parents 90 lb German Sheppard – he actually can’t keep up with her! She LOVES her walks and can run (even with three legs) like the wind! Then she is content to curl on with you on the couch! She is just as sweet can be!

Rosie’s Medical Updates

Rosie visited the specialist yesterday and here’s what they had to say:

The Good News!

Rosie doesn’t have a fever and the infection in her leg is completely gone. The vet is very happy with how far she has come in just a week! They changed the bandaging technique and instructed Joe (my hubby). I stood in the corner and talked to Rosie like a crazy person when they were poking and prodding at her. She just sits there and takes it like a champ! She is truly an angel! They’ve put a donut thing on her heal to make sure the bandage isn’t rubbing and the skin can heal properly and instead of sugar we’re now using a gel.

The Not-So-Good News!

The vet is worried about the toe with exposed bone and thinks that it will more than likely need to be amputated. They are also worried that even if the skin heals, that the leg could still be useless. I asked for a timeline and it’s anyone’s guess, but I am thinking it will be a couple of months before we know if the entire limb will require amputation and then that’s a whole other can of beans! Even if she can keep her leg, she’ll need extensive therapy and rehabilitation so regardless we have a long road ahead of us!

If you want to send Rosie words of encouragement – please leave a comment or email her foster mom at arhknight@gmail.com – I promise I will read every single one to her!

So do y’all want to know what Rosie is REALLY like?

Let me tell you about this sweet gal! Besides being absolutely adorable, Rosie is the definition of a young, sweet and happy dog! Even with everything she’s been through (which besides the obvious, we have no idea what she’s been through in her past) she loves everyone she meets! She has probably licked more faces than I can count! She loves playing and wrestling with her foster sisters and afternoon naps on the couch with foster pa!

She has recently become oblivious to her injured leg and is getting quite upset at me for putting her in the doggy stroller on walks! She can manage just fine with her three good legs – at least that’s what I think she’s telling me when she gives me “the look”! She loves being outside and exploring with her canine pals!

This morning she brought me a plastic clothes hanger which to her made perfect sense to chew! So there’s definitely still a lot of puppy in her and we’re continuing to work on teaching her what toys she can play with! She’s extremely comical and makes us laugh everyday. Her housetraining is amazing! And she goes into her crate without a fuss but makes a wonderful foot warmer in the big bed!

It breaks my heart to think that a dog a sweet as Rosie has had to endure such suffering, however I do know that if anyone can get through it – it’s her! Keep cheering her on!

Rosie Has Her Own Blog!

October 5, 2011 at 12:07 pm • Posted in Rosie, wiener blog2 Comments

Yip Yap! Rosie has her own blog and she’d like to share her story!

Hi friends! For those of you who have been following Rosie’s story, you’ll know that this girl has had quite a rough start to life! Rosie is an 8 month old doxie mix who ended up in a high skill shelter in the States with an injured leg and possible internal bleeding. She is missing hair from her nose and eyebrow, her ear is ripped and she has a nub for a tail!

Rosie suffered a fractured leg and now injuries associated with her splint. Unfortunately, when her splint was removed the vet discovered that underneath the cast her skin had died and when the splint was removed the dead skin was ripped off, specifically on her heal and paw, right down to the muscle and in one area, to the bone! Obviously, this has been excruciatingly painful for Rosie.

Rosie is going through endless amounts of bandaging supplies; she visits the vet 3-4 times a week for check-ins and is undergoing laser therapy (thank you Guelph Animal Hospital!) to help her skin re-grow. We have started a Chipin for Rosie in hopes of raising some funds to assist with her medical costs. First and foremost, please keep Rosie in your thoughts as she continues her uphill battle but if you’re able to contribute financially (any little bit helps), we would be so appreciative.  http://canadiandachshundrescue.chipin.com/rosie

Get Well Soon Bella

August 14, 2011 at 3:11 pm • Posted in Lucy, wiener blog2 Comments

Meet Bella.  She has come all the way from Taiwan.  She’s had a rough go of it so far.  First she was picked up by the Pound.  They took her to a Taiwan Vet.  She needed surgery on her spine and hip.  She was in bad shape.  But now she is with CDR.  She is resting and recovering and I know soon they will find you a forever home.  Where you will be loved, and you will never have to worry again.  They are great people

I’ve got a smile on my face because the picnic is just around the corner.  I get to see all my wiener friends.  Its a great time.  I just hope Mom doesn’t dress me up!!!  I’m not a ‘girlie dog’.

Satchel Rocks!!

Friday Mom came home with (another) dog.  Just babysitting for the weekend (I’ve heard that before).  His name is Satchel.  Well, I had to pull the ‘Lucy’ Diva act just to let him know when he stands in our household.  But he is one cool dude.  He loves all my other ‘brother’s’ and I like him too.  He just kind of fit in with the group.  He even likes Dad (go figure).  He’s smart and will give paw’s and sit.  He even shares his “blankie” with me and Ollie.  I hope he finds a forever home soon.  He is One Cool Dog!!!!

It’s Summer Time

Yahoo!! The weather is great. That means our Picnic is just around the corner. I’m looking forward to seeing all my ‘wiener’ friends.

Daisy Post-Surgery

March 22, 2011 at 9:39 pm • Posted in Daisy, wiener blog2 Comments

Hey, it’s me, Daisy.

So I’m out of surgery.  A BIG thank you goes to Dr. John!

I has 2 screws in my leg to to hold it in place while it heals.  Apparently the break had already started to heal (they think it was about a month old), but it was healing all wonky.  So it’s a good thing that I had the surgery.

Right now I get 2 weeks of crate rest and antibiotics and pain meds.  I’m going to be a walking pharmacy!

Dr. John couldn’t spay me just yet because I’m in full heat and my leg surgery took longer than expected.

This is me all snug-as-a-bug-in-a-rug feelin nice and toasty!

Yah! We’re Twittering away!
