Rest in peace, Henry

Henry went to the vet to have a dental yesterday because he had sore and infected teeth. He was definitely in pain. We did blood work and he had a check-up before the surgery and the vet said his blood was fine and his heart and lungs were strong.

Henry survived the surgery and had two molars removed, but went into cardiac arrest during his recovery. The vet was unable to save him.

Henry was a friendly happy little guy. We will miss you.

What would I do with 5,427 foster homes.

I’d save every dachshund who is sleeping in a cage in a shelter tonight, that’s what.

Well, of course some of them are with great rescues like CDR, but still… so many dachshunds without homes.  Where do all these dogs come from? If a dachshund has an average litter size of 5 puppies, that’s 1085 litters of puppies without homes.

Sometimes I think about these things. Sometimes I poop in the kitchen even though I know I shouldn’t.

Ohhhh Henry!

Welcome to CDR, Henry. I guarantee that your foster home will be more comfortable than that cage at the shelter. The shelter he was in becomes overcrowded often and you and I both know what happens then.

Where are the owners of these dogs?  I get that life happens, but why not call a rescue or look for a new home for the little life that has given you unconditional love for 8 years?

Henry – you look like  a REAL dachshund. I know you’ll find a great home.

If you squint, maybe it looks a little like a dachshund

Sometimes we get calls from shelters about dachshund mixes. Sometimes they are dachshund mixes, sometimes they are this guy. If we can, we try to save them. So… what do you think he is – aside from hungry? He was found as a stray and never claimed. Humans.

Update: His name is Chance and thanks to CDR’s amazing fosters, he’ll be joining the rescue this weekend!!!

Ah ha!

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

I rest my case.

Three in the bed and the little one said…

I wanted to show everyone how I have mended my ways thanks to your advice. I’m happy to report that THE CAGE IS GONE. I no longer have to sit in jail when there is food around, and Holly and I have decided to stop trying to kill each other. For the past 8 months you would never catch us in the same room, let alone the same bed. But here we are… me, Dumb,  and Bossy squished into one bed because ‘someone’ is being stingy with beds these days.

What does this have to do with rescue? Well, sometimes dogs, like people, don’t get along. Sibling rivalry, let’s call it. We get a lot of dogs in the rescue because of this. What did it take to fix it? Tough love. We have all been kicked out of the big bed and now sleep beside it in our own beds. We also now have some rules to follow (except Duchess because she’s an idiot) and the lady is speaking to us with authority instead of treating us like babies.  Do I like it? No. But it sure beats everyone walking on eggshells waiting for the next fight, and me having to spend time in THE CAGE.

Don’t give up. If what you’re doing isn’t working, try something else.

It wasn’t me

What? Holly did it. The bed had too much stuffing, anyway.

Why does no one believe me around here? I’m telling you, it was Robin. I mean Holly. It wasn’t me. I was just sitting here.

Meet Winnie

July 15, 2010 at 10:35 am • Posted in Frankie5 Comments

Winnie learned a hard lesson. If you aren’t nice to the little people, your tail might end up in a shelter. Fortunately, she won the hearts of the staff and she’ll soon be out of jail and in a foster home.

Winnie has an adopter waiting for her but needs to have some vet work done first. There are no kiddos in her new home!

I kinda want to lick those giant ears!

Welcome to CDR, Winnie!

Introducing Larry

July 14, 2010 at 8:52 am • Posted in Frankie7 Comments

Meet my double dappled friend. You know how I feel about double dapples and Larry is lucky to only be deaf as a result of being twice dappled. Larry’s a decent man and will have a home soon after those dangly bits on his tail end are removed. I’m not sure what those are, but the rescue people sure don’t like them!

Don’t look too hard at the picture. I think those blue eyes are trying to hypnotize you into adopting him.

Welcome to CDR, Larry!

Did someone say BBQ?

I don’t think it’s too early to start planning for our picnic in September, do you? I need your help with it. You might know that my human has embroidery machines and can put dachshunds on anything. The stuff we sell as well as our huge raffle makes the picnic a good fundraiser for us.

So, tell me. What fabric item would you like to see ‘dachshundized’ that you would purchase and enjoy? She has lots of blankets and sweatshirts. Do you like a more subtle dachshund or one that is loud and proud? Do you buy gifts for small people, or stuff for yourself? What dachshund items have you bought from ‘other places’ because you just couldn’t resist?

As always, we’ll be looking for donations of unused items for the raffle and we appreciate donations of food and drink. If you can spare a half hour or so, we can always use help at the event because it’s one the people AND dogs like to enjoy so the people organizing it are usually run off their tails.

Personally, I think everything is better with a dachshund on it, or better yet, with MY NAME on it. Hey – she can do blankets with your name on it… maybe that’s an idea she could use – but if you don’t pick yours up and end up costing the rescue money, I’ll bite you.
