The dogs listed on this page are being fostered in
Ontario.
If
none of these dogs suit your family and you don't want to join our waiting
list, don’t worry, there are other Canadian
and American rescue groups that can help you find the right dog for your
family. Please see our Links page for
other dachshund rescues, and all-breed rescues.
For Western Canada adoptions, please
contact angelsdreamrescue@gmail.com
All dogs are spayed or neutered and are up-to-date on
vaccinations before adoption.
If you
are interested in adopting, please fill out an application and ask about one of these
furkids.

The Perfect Dog for My Family
Your perfect match may not be available today but,
unfortunately, there are many homeless dogs and who knows what
tomorrow will bring. We keep a waiting list of approved applicants and many
dogs are placed in approved homes before they are listed on our site.
Please fill out an application if you would like to adopt a dachshund or
dachshund mix!
Notice though how I say ‘the perfect dog for your family’,
not ‘the perfect dog’. There are no perfect dogs, just like there are no
perfect people. Most, but not all, rescue dogs have an ‘issue’ that landed
them in rescue. Many are not good with kids because kids move quickly, are
unpredictable, and can be scary to a small dog who is not used to them.
Most need additional socialization and a refresher in house training. Some
need to be convinced that they will never again be abused before they will
greet you with a kiss and a wag. All dogs would benefit from training
classes.
Unless otherwise noted, all
dogs are fostered and will be placed in Ontario. |

Wendy

ADOPTED!
Do you know dachshunds? Wendy is THE stereotypical dachshund. If you
love the breed, you have to love her. Wendy is stubborn, hungry, bossy, and
she can bark. If you give her an inch, she'll take over your life. She is
also loving, cuddly, funny, and a total sweetheart.

Mrs Dash

ADOPTION PENDING!!!
Mrs Dash is a dachshund/beagle mix who is homeless due to illness in her
family. She is busy and interested in everything. She is good with people
and would be ok with a more submissive male dog, but might pull a diva act
with other females. She has lived with cats but would probably prefer to
chase them than cuddle with them.
See how her front leg curls up? Mrs Dash was hit by a car and her leg no
longer works. This doesn't slow her down or stop her from going up and down
stairs. If you are ever in a car accident and break your arm, she promises
not to hold it against you. She hopes that people don't hold her injured
leg against her.
Mrs Dash has no problem with the fact that she is a mutt. She knows that
she is less likely to have back problems or other conditions suffered by
purebred dachshunds or beagles. She can climb stairs, unlike many
dachshunds. She has the best of each breed's personality, and she is
one-of-a-kind.

Feebie
ADOPTION PENDING
Feebie is an 11 year old red longhair girl. She is loving, fun, and even
housetrained. She is ok with cats and other dogs but is nervous around
children. She'll suit almost any home and will have you loving her in
minutes.
Dachshunds often live to their mid-teens so don't let her age put you
off.

Henry
ADOPTED
Henry is a 3 year old dappled boy. He's a great dog looking for a home
where he can get lots of attention. He has a bit of separation anxiety and
will bark when left alone, so no apartments for him.

Willow

ADOPTED
Willow is a 3 year old wire girl.

Duchess

Duchess is a 12 year old lady looking for a
nice retirement home. She is a loving and sweet girl. She is ok with other
dogs and would fit in with almost any family. She's as housetrained as a
dachshund gets and she's ready to join a new family.
We didn't know this until the vet told us,
but Duchess is nearly blind. It doesn't slow her down at all, but you have
to make noise when you approach her so she doesn't get startled. She is
fine outside on a leash and likes her walks. Unlike Buddy, Duchess has
already adjusted to being blind and her other senses help her get along
just fine.
Duchess has suffered some injury in the past
and is a little bit 'twisted' when she walks. She has some scars from the
injury but she has healed. Her foster mom calls her the 'Twisted
Sister'.
Contact Cathy at dachiecathy@wightman.ca

Gretta

Gretta
is a senior (12-14) red girl who has returned to the rescue because her
parents were no longer able to take care of her. She is a great little dog
who loves women but isn't as comfortable with men. She barks at them. This
just means that it will take her longer to warm up to a man. She is good
with everyone.
This
senior is very active and spry. She acts like a much younger dog. She was
originally a stray so we don't know her real age. She is quite white, but
some dogs (and people) go gray earlier than others.
Gretta
used to be housetrained but when she moved to an apartment she was trained
to use pee pads. It is all coming back to her now that she is in her foster
home. She is used to having someone with her most of the time.

Buddy -
Special Needs

Buddy
is a 5-6 year old red smooth boy who is a little plump now, but should be
around 16 pounds. He is a sweet little guy who loves playing with other
dogs and he loves to cuddle. He would prefer owners who are home most of
the time.
Buddy
has a condition called retinal degeneration, which is causing him to lose
his sight. He was surrendered because he became aggressive quite suddenly.
We also placed him in a home where he was fine - until one day he reacted
badly when his owner walked in the room. They couldn't figure out what
happened and were worried about their grandchildren. We had no idea that he
was losing his sight and the answer was as simple as making noise. He will
get snappy when scared, so you just have to let him know that you're
there.
Dogs
adjust quite well to blindness. Because Buddy is young and losing it
gradually, his other senses will adjust. There's nothing wrong with his big
dachsie sniffer. He needs a quieter home without children. Other dogs
should wear tags so they don't sneak up on this guy as he learns to adjust
to his condition. You also have to understand that this is probably a
little confusing for Buddy and quite upsetting. You'll have to work with
him to help him learn his environment.
Buddy
has 1/3 of his sight left and will likely be blind within a year. We'd like
to place him in a home as soon as possible so he can learn his way around
and learn the family's routines while he is still able to see. Buddy
will need to be carried up and down all steps. He doesn't do stairs.
Buddy
will never make fun of your morning face, ask you if that's REALLY what
you're wearing, judge a book by its cover, criticize your taste in paint
colour, or give you the hairy eyeball.
To
learn more about Buddy, contact his foster mom at maryjamieson@cogeco.ca
